Although good things did happen in 2012.. It was a suck ass year…BUT..Not musically.
I had no problem compiling a musical list although i really hate doing so as everyone has different taste and I hate to shove my opinions down anyone’s throat.. So this is just to amuse you. and appease my inner critic self..
Top 3 Albums:
Dan Vapid and the Cheats “Dan Vapid and the Cheats”
Shoes “ignition”
Undecided by Default “Totally Undecided”
And these are my top 5 artists of 2012:
In no particular order
Hillary Burton:
Hillary is a member of the Bands NUSHU, Molly Pitchers, and her solo work called Honeychain. As an artist played from the very newly born days of Woody Radio (Back when it was called CMR). She has shown and grown with us and Gidget (among the rest of woody) continues to support every aspect of her ever growing musical legacy. This year NUSHU release of Joystick was a well loved fave among the “Secret Weapon” along with fellow DJ’s Mac and Glenn. The Cd was home to last years number one song . A cover of “Precious To Me” by Phil Seymour. When the CD was released in 2012 it included covers of the Housemartins, The Knack, The Cars, and Kirsty MacColl. The Molly Pitchers have a song on the upcoming tribute to Elvis Costello.”Beyond Belief: A Tribute to Elvis Costello.” And early this year Honeychain will release an EP of some amazing songs that we have been slowly previewing over the last few months, including the very touching “Than U” that we played during the “Benefit To Superstorm Sandy”
Joe Algieri:
A very talented musician out of Australia. He has played with a few of the “Secret Weapon” bands (Britannica’s, and The JAC, along with work with Maria Sokratis) and is also found regularly in the Indie bots on Woody Radio.
Maria Sokratis:
An artist “Boris” of the “Secret Weapon” found. Not sure how she came to find us, but we are sure glad she did.. Her raw vocals blow away the weak voiced girl singers of today. This “Gem” does not need autotune to entertain and tickle your eardrums. Her VOICE is it!. Her previous band, The Mystaken, earned a spot on the annual Christmas list of Rodney On The Roq’s. Her writing sticks with you for days, and the songs get stuck in your head!
Peter Hackett:
A long time artist with Woody Radio and wonderful solo entertainer. Last year, he wooed us all with a song aboutr the Bionic woman herself! This year he took us on a journey with “On the Green SeventySeen” “1977” (quickly being an overplayed song on the Gidget MP3 player). Over the years, he has also provided Gidget with classic covers of “Highway to Hell” and “Enola Gay”, among others. Peter also provided the cover that started out maybe too many of Gidget’s radio shows, a wonderful cover of the theme to “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” He knows the answer to the universe is 42 and he continues to make Gidget happy with his musical talents.
George Barnett:
Gidget’s daughter’s favorite artist.. As a fellow DJ over at her college station Maia has given more support to this artist than any artist this teenager has been fixated with.. But the credit does not go to Her.. The credit lies with fellow Woody DJ Loki/Amanda Cobb. She found this young lad when he was just 17 pimping his own record.. a record he played all the instruments on. A completely incredible solo effort done by such a young talented amazing young lad. And as he grows closer to age 19. He continues to put out these amazing records in which he does all the work. Gidget affectionately called him the British teenage Goyte. He is an artist to watch for.
As an added “BONUS”
“Boris” did his list in “Banner” form.
WoooHoooo
As another year of the “Secret Weapon” closes my new years wish is another great music to make you rock hard to music that deserves to be heard.
