The day late and a dollar short Flashback Friday

A very special Flashback Friday today..on Saturday.
A few months back I blogged about my high school crush.. Greg Soucy.. Who I thought was gay but is living the life in Mexico with his very beautiful wife.. And not gay.
Yesterday he emailed with a video
A video I remember like it was yesterday.
And three of my high school crushes were in it.. Greg, Tom, and Alain.

Let’s start back in 1983…There was a show called Dance Party on channel 20. A few of us petitioned to have our school on and they eventually picked us. I forged my moms signature on the permission slip and was signed up along with 99 of my other friends to go and dance on live tv.
We all left on the bus that morning… we got to miss school.. I was a sophomore.. there was maybe 50 seniors and 2 freshmen.
Among them Dina Ruiz.. She grew up and Married Clint Eastwood.
The Dance Party allowed us a band to play and a drama act.
For the band it was my friends Target..New wave ska whatever kinda band..It had a horn player.. I think his name was Dave.
I am not sure Dave went to my school..But Pete, Chris and Kevin and of course Alain Mombrinie..He was from France.
Ask Maia.. All the kool kids are from France.
2 busses, 100 high school kids..And a Polaroid of a naked cheerleader from the other bus being passed around..I really hated the bitch so I didn’t even look. We used to say a joke about the cheerleaders at my school. What happens when they do the splits?. 5 school rings fall out. Dina Ruiz was nice.. and not like that.. But the cheerleader in question was a real bitch.. Think Parker Posey in “Dazed and Confused”.

So we get to the studio We all just kinda found spot on the floor and listened to the rules. No obscene gestures, no misbehaving etc….The Host Bill Kelly gets up and introduces our school. And then we all start dancing to really bad music. Kris Hanson and I were dancing with Tom Glasgow and his friend. We were really close not really wanting to partner up though so Kris was across from me. But as they brought the camera closer between us we moved apart. When we watched the tap later it seemed as if we were feet away when in reality it was just the camera.. I could have been hugging Kris as she was so close to me.
I was probably the shortest person there. At 4’11” I kinda thought I’d blend in.. As much as I wanted on TV the camera made me really self conscious. Kris had no trouble smiling every time.. I had a hard time keeping a straight face.
Then it was time for The Targets to play.
These were also my good friends. So I fully supported them every small high school thing they played. Not to mention the singer was Alain Mombrinie.
Bill the host got in a little trouble for say thing guys can get up and kick ass but it’s like getting teeth out to get them to talk.
Someone probably complained to the FCC.
When they were done I put on my selfmade Target Tshirt and started dancing again. In turn the T-shirt got me a bunch of close-ups..At this point Greg Soucy was dancing across from me.. With his wild all over the floor dancing. He was wearing all black with a red tie.. I still remember that even without looking.
The rest of the show consisted of people fighting for camera time and my getting quite a lot. At one point they were playing the video for Human Leagues” Don’t you want me” and the camera had me do a follow thing with the video in split screen.
Toward the end of the show was our drama presentation where BJ Weir and Lance Alameda did a play on the Five neat guys.. and the other 3 missed the bus.
It was awesome and they actually I think placed and got to go back and do it again.. it was voted on our something.
When we took breaks the camera guy named Mike was very keen on talking to me. And on the way out he made sure to give me his phone number. I did in fact call him.. He was also 26 years old.. I was 15 maybe even 14….And in my usual bitch self told him that on the phone and asked if he was some kind of pedophile. Cause really when you look at the tape I look 12. I was well aware of this…
Pervert HA!
He was really cute for an old guy!
BUT!
Now where are my 26 yr old cameramen?
Ha!
It was a time in history that when beta was no longer needed I had no way to watch the tape and it went into a memory in my brain.
The hard thing is too look at the people who have passed on. Tom Glasgow died right after graduation. He was with a friend and drove off a tall winding road out in Niles Canyon. He left behind his pregnant girlfriend. The little girl grew up beautiful. But fatherless.
Brandon Moore was my best friend in Jr High’s twin brother. No one knows how or why but shortly after this and the breakup between him and his jr high and high school girlfriend he drove into the creek behind the high school. This was the first death of a classmate I experienced. And It was someone I knew very well and liked. His sister and I were very close but we managed to get in so much trouble our parental figures thought it best to separate us. And we grew apart. When their father remarried things were so tense at home and I was not allowed over. Bri could not keep her beloved hamster so I took him home. But even then she was never allowed over to visit the hamster. It was very sad. She is in my friends on FB but that weird Jr High thing still hangs there.
In this first video Tom is dressed very new wave with a strip down his cheek.
As seen at .08
Kris Hanson is behind in the red shirt and I am behind her..
At .38 you can see Brandon dancing in a white shirt with black stripes.

So sit back and enjoy.
He is the only other one I found.
Dina Ruiz at 4:37

And as a bonus today
Marty had a photobooth pic on his website.
So I am giving you a few of my old ones.

  1. The cheerleader you mentioned had me flashing on ‘Amanda Pepperidge’ from ‘Animal House’…is that close?

  2. Start the Wayback Machine!
Judging from those moves, perhaps you were destined for ‘Twirl’ Radio instead.
Amazing when we look back at our ‘Yout’.
I’m glad most of mine was not captured on film, or I’d certainly still be locked away.
‘Hoppy’ Easter to you and yours.
